Colloquium Musicum: Marcel Camprubi, “Unwriting Music History.” Musical notation has long been privileged as the point of departure for the historical study of music. This talk will focus on the Arabic context of tenth-century Baghdad, where notation was available to performers and music theorists yet remained largely unpursued, a circumstance that defies technologically deterministic narratives of music history. Colloquium Musicum: Ross Osmun. “A Rock Star Retires: Franz Liszt and the Genesis of the B Minor Sonata.” Liszt’s retirement from the concert stage spawned some of the greatest compositions in the piano repertoire in the decades that followed.
